Lives are being put in danger on a daily basis on the roads due to the carelessness of both motorists and pedestrians.

According to the Police Traffic Unit, two young pedestrians have already been killed this year, with another ten seriously injured, two of whom will probably be disabled for the rest of their lives.

Two incidents occurred in the space of 13 hours between 8.30pm on Thursday and 9am Friday when pedestrians were hit by vehicles in Nicosia, while attempting to cross the road.

One was a seven-year-old girl, accompanied by a relative in Makedonitissa. Doctors treating her have said that she has sustained an unspecified fracture but that her life is not in danger.

In the other case, a car driven by a 32-year-old from Nicosia hit a 62-year-old woman on Louki Akrita street, also as she was trying to cross the road.

Commenting, head of Nicosia Traffic Police Alkis Kyriacou urged both pedestrians and drivers to be especially careful.

In the case of pedestrians, he said they should only cross at zebra crossings.

He added that a lack of proper care is costing lives, and drew attention to another case several days ago where a pedestrian, also trying to cross the road, was hit by a car in Strovolos.

Recently, two Romanians were killed after being hit while attempting to cross the Nicosia-Limassol and Larnaca-Kofinou highways.
